The Background
Jeff Loos took on a mammoth task of converting a fully working farm into a mini tourist retreat and not only that, he decided to get as close to carbon neutral as possible. He approached Robin Bowen of Good Life Incorporated, who came up with a viable, workable system.
The Solution
Underfloor heating was used as the medium to provide warm energy to the dwellings. The energy providers were supplied by Nibe Energy Systems. These Ground Source heat pumps have very high coefficient of performance and efficiently heat and provide hot water. To further the efficiency, these systems were linked to Viessmann evacuated tube solar heating, which makes the heat pumps virtually dormant in summer.
The Benefits
As this was a commercial project, Mr Loos qualified for a Low Carbon Building Phase 2 Grant which contributed 50% of his outlay. Good Life Incorporated was the natural choice as it is fully accredited with the BRE, Clear Skies, Low Carbon Trust programme. On top of this Nibe are world leaders with their technology and Jeff was more than impressed with their efficiency as well as the virtually silent running of the Ground Source Units.
